Glowing Forest of the Western Ghats

Have you heard about the glowing forest of the Western Ghats?  With a few showers of the monsoon, the humidity in the region soars. With this, a magic starts unfolding in select forests of the Western Ghats.

With rising humidity, the most conducive environments thrive on the forest floors.  The mycelia of a species of fungi known as Mycena, starts actively spreading on the dead twigs and trunks alike.  Within a few weeks the entire mass of dead wood is covered.  The wood that looks like any other during the day time, starts to glow in the dark.

The lore

Those who have traversed the forests in Goa and around, and have taken the time to speak to the forest lore, might have definitely heard of “bhejre”.  During the old days, when the people used to go hunting in the forests, they would feel that there is animal spirit in the forest.  Shapes of various animals could be see in the dark, the moment they would put the torches off. For many years I wondered what these spirits could be… Only after watching the magical forest glow did I realise what they might have been referring to.

The stums of the trees and the branches make various shapes in the dark, resembling animals and sometimes also humans.

Unforgettable experience

You must plan a visit to these forests to witness this experience.  Nature’s Nest would be your go-to place for this experience.  Nature’s Nest is not just located right next to Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary near Mollem, but also have packages and programmes that offer a close experience with the glowing forest.  Our naturalists are well trained to not only give you the magical experience, but also to take care of your safety.  The trail begins at 8.00 pm and goes for about 90 minutes to one hour.  The walk is gentle, yet be prepared for a pouring rain.

You would need a good rain coat or a poncho, a walking torch, closed shoes and that’s it!

Book the monsoon package and you will also be able to participate in the Monsoon night Safari, which is also a highlight of the resort.
