Pit Viper Monitoring Project

Project Purpose: Monitor pit vipers in private plantations in the buffer region of Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary

Pit vipers are snakes predominantly known for their heat sensing pits; a sensory organ which enables them to locate warm blooded animals in absolute darkness. Deforestation, firewood, burning of undergrowth in the buffer and private plantation are posing serious challenges to the survival of these magnificent animals. In this project we will be focusing on Hump Nosed Pit Viper (Hypnale hypnale) and Bamboo Pit Viper (Trimeresurus stejnegeri).
