Otter Conservation Project

Project Purpose: Address the conservation needs of otters at grassroots level in Goa

Otters are the only semi-aquatic mammals found in India. They are the keystone species of the riverine ecosystem. Being vulnerable to extinction, these unique species are in urgent need of our conservation attention. This project focuses on two species of otters namely Smooth-coated otter (Lutrogale perspicillata) and Asian Small-clawed otter (Aonyx cinereus).

Otter Conservation Project

1. Monitor otter populations in Goa; study their behavior and adaptations

2. Restore otter habitats; prevent further degradation

3. Build otter conservation capacity among the local stakeholders
