Understanding Reptiles & Amphibians with Dr. Varad Giri
About Dr. Varad Giri

Dr. Varad Giri mainly works on the conservation of caecilians and lizards of India in general and the Western Ghats in particular. His work is mainly focused on conducting intensive surveys in less explored areas to understand the diversity, distribution and conservation issues of the species and their habitats. One of the difficulties in effective conservation initiatives is unstable taxonomy of amphibians and reptiles. His efforts are in this regard has lead to many new species descriptions, taxonomic revisions and designation of new and proper taxonomic keys, which can be used in the future by researchers and conservation organizations.

He has worked with the Bombay Natural History Society (BNHS) for twelve years on various positions. He was mainly associated with the Natural History Collections at BNHS and during his tenure developed their herpetology collections.

About The Workshop

We are glad to announce our second workshop with Dr. Varad Giri. In this workshop we delve into the secretive world of this segment of lesser fauna and know more about their wonderful world. Also learn basic techniques of field identification with hands-on experience. Mr. Ramesh Zarmekar will be the local expert.

Amphibians and reptiles are one of the most neglected groups of vertebrates. In India more than 50% herps are endemic and many are known from a small geographical area. One of the problems for this group is lack of proper literature for their identification. Much of our understanding is based on historical or recently published literature but most of it is in the form of scientific publications. The studies on Indian amphibians and reptiles have been metamorphosing from the last two decades. Although vital component of the biodiversity, this group was never adored by nature lovers as they lack the aesthetic value which most charismatic species have. It was mainly due to the myths associated with them and lack of awareness.

To address this issue we have started conducting these workshops.  In this workshops we provide scientific training to the participants. This module is mainly based on our long-term association and understanding about the amphibians and reptiles of India. This will be a fun-filled but equally strenuous exercise accompanied by simple and interactive ways. One of the main aims of these workshops is to generate a base-line team of experts who will utilize this training to start a serious study on amphibians and reptiles in their place or be a part of any scientific explorations. We assure you that the time you spent in this workshop will be fruitful.
